1. Focus on low-hanging fruit keywords

Low-hanging fruit keywords are keywords with lesser competition. One way to find them is to look for pages that rank anywhere from 5 to 20 positions in a search engine. Another option is to check on your previous low-ranking posts and update them with new information or replace visuals with better ones.

Generally, there are two types of keywords:

  • Head Term – These keywords are broader terms and have less word count but with impenetrable competition. These are the common phrases that people use when searching online. If you’re a novice to SEO or a start-up business owner, it will be challenging to outperform the competition using these keywords.
  • Long-tailed keywords – These are long-string of words, but they are more specific than head term keywords. They usually have a low search volume, which can also mean that there’s less competition. Therefore, it is easier to optimize long-tailed keywords to rank better in search engine results. Moreover, these keywords have higher conversion potential. People using specific terms when searching online tend to have a higher interest. Therefore there’s a good chance that they will make a purchase.

Building a list of localized keywords allows you to rank better on search engine results. This is oftentimes used by small businesses to target customers within the locality or nearby areas. Based on your list, you can then create targeted content aimed at nearby customers. Since these customers have the highest chance of visiting your business, you’re able to increase your potential sales.

2. List Down Localized Keywords

You can start with listing and researching keywords that include your exact location. For example, “Los Angeles coffee shop” or “Coffee shop in Los Angeles.” You can also use long-tailed keywords such as “Los Angeles Plumbers open 24 hours”. In this way, you also target people who use smart speakers for their search activities. You can also extend your search to other areas if your business also serves those places.

If you notice that localized keywords have less traffic than broader terms, it doesn’t mean that the results aren’t helpful. Localized keywords allow you to put your brand in front of nearby customers who are more likely to purchase your product.

3. Check on your competitions

Checking on your competition’s popular pages isn’t a bad thing. Everyone does keyword research differently, and your competition may be one step ahead of you. Learning what they are targeting can give you some advantages and could give your website better rankings.

One way to check this is with the help of the Jaaxy keyword search tool. It can reverse engineer the top 10 search results from the three giant search engines Google, Yahoo, and Bing. Under the Search Analysis tab, you can plug in the keywords, and provide you with the list of ranking websites with these keywords.

You can also view helpful details that can provide you with insights into why they rank better on search engine results. Depending on your subscription, they would provide you with the following:

  • Title
  • URL
  • Meta Description
  • Meta Keywords
  • Word Count
  • Links on Site
  • Alexa Rank
  • Keyword Density
  • Backlinks
  • AdSense

Another way to check your competition’s rankings is to use the Site Rank tab. Aside from using this feature to check your website’s ranking, you can use this to check your competition’s ranking too. Enter the keywords, and the URL on the search fields then hit search. Jaaxy will then show you where the webpage is positioned in the search results or if the webpage has ranked up or down since your last search.

4. Make the most of a Keyword Search Tool

A keyword search tool can cut back on hours doing keyword research and help you in many ways. We’ll use Jaaxy once again as an example. It is a potent keyword search tool and very easy to use. Under the Search tab, enter the keywords, and they will provide you with information such as:

  • Avg – Average number of searches per month.
  • Traffic – This is the number of visits to your websites if you achieve the first rank in Google.
  • QSR or Quoted Search Results – How many websites ranking in Google are using this exact keyword?
  • KQI or Keyword Quality Indicator – This gives you an idea of whether the keyword is good in SEO.
  • SEO – This shows the SEO scores, which means the higher score, the better the keyword is.
  • Domains – This will show you which domains are still available for your keywords.

Also, you can check the related keywords on the right side, which will give you an idea of what keywords you can use for your next topic. When you click any of these keyword search results, Jaaxy will perform another search. It digs deeper, expands your search, and provides you with more relevant terms and ideas that you can use for your content.

5. Utilize Google Suggest

Perhaps the common way for keyword research is using Google Suggest. Since Google is the biggest search engine globally, it’s only right to use its suggestions of popular keywords that most people look for. You enter a general term in the Google search bar, and a list of words will pop up relevant to your general term.

Google offers suggestions to provide better search results to its users. It provides you with a list of new keyword opportunities for your content or your business. These suggestions are constructive since it provides good insight into what people are searching for. Google also updates this list every 2 to 3 weeks to ensure that you get the most updated and relevant keywords or phrases.

Moreover, you can get more suggestions by scrolling down to the bottom of the search results page and looking for “searches related.” You will see additional potential keyword suggestions you can use.

getting opinion from your customers6. Ideas from common customers’ questions

Creating content centered around the common customers’ questions could land your pages a higher SEO ranking. Try to identify the common questions that customers ask and develop content that answers these questions. There are a few ways where you can gather these questions. Here are some suggestions:

  • Surveys or interviews – The best way to know customers’ common questions is by asking straight from the source. You can try offering voluntary surveys to your customers to gather information. Ask them what questions did they use before finding out about your product. What are their concerns? Or what do they want to know before they decided to purchase your product?

Sales – If you have a sales team, you can also ask them what they receive when talking to your customers. They are also a great source of information since they deal with customers directly.

7. Use a search listening tool

Search listening tools provide you with phrases and questions that people are asking related to your keyword. This is another way to find common questions. Tools such as AnswerThePublic, Semrush, or Act-On can provide you with a goldmine of customer insights to help you create fresh and relevant content.

For example, the Answer the Public tool provides you with a cloud illustration of all the questions and phrases surrounding the keyword you have provided. Questions start with what, where, when, how, why, who, and so on. It’s an amazing tool if you want to build very informative content for your audience.

8. Use the “People also ask” section on Google

Besides getting common questions from customers and other tools, you can also use the “People also ask” section on Google. Enter your keywords, and Google will show you the common questions that people ask about your keywords. If you want to get more questions results, click on one of them, and Google will generate more questions to add to the list.

Google’s “people also ask” section allows you to find relevant and valuable questions that most people are asking. Determine whether these questions will be worthwhile to focus on. You can use Jaaxy to check on the Keyword Quality. Then when you’re done, you can build content around these questions and possibly get new leads who are looking for answers to these questions online.

9. Try a keyword generator tool

Keyword generators can provide you with hundreds of keywords in one search. Generally, these tools do not require you to sign up, and you can use them straight away.

Keyword generators such as Keywordsheeter, Ahref’s Keyword Generator, and Bulk Keyword Generator are just some of them. These great tools will provide you with a long list of keyword ideas, and sometimes you can also import or download the list.

Depending on which of these tools you will choose, you can also find some useful features to help you in your keyword research.

For example, Keywordsheeter provides you with keyword difficulty, search volume, cost per click, domain availability, and rank checker. These tools are normally used in conjunction with other keyword search tools to help you decide which ones to choose.

  1. Nice site David. Thanks for your tips and honest and informative review. It definitely has me intrigued. As someone that is just dipping their toes into the affiliate marketing world, you are presenting a very positive and informative discussion which seems to be knowledge-based. I will definitely be looking further into this.

    • It is the basic knowledge that we need when starting out. If you could get this right, it would save a lot of trouble with your content going forward. I have seen most marketers write lots of content and still not getting the traffic that they would like, this is because they fail in understanding keywords and how they work.

  2. These are very helpful tips on keyword research and how to use keywords to improve your SEO rankings and look at your competition. Although I have been using Jaaxy for keyword research, I was not aware of the way in which “Search Analysis” can be used to see where the competition is ranking. I will certainly be implementing this tip in my keyword research.

    • Is always good to know who your competitors are and what keyword they are using so that you can tweak your keywords for better rankings. The search Analysis is a key function in Jaaxy can assist you in this keyword search that can help with your rankings.
