Deluxe Business is a company that offers products for business operations, digital marketing, payments and receivables, brand marketing, and different business solutions. It was founded by W.R. Hotchkiss in 1915 as Deluxe Check Printers based in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
According to the company’s website, W.R. Hotchkiss has an idea about making personalized flat-pocket checkbooks. So he decided to secure a $300 small business loan and started the check printing company. By 1920, Deluxe Check Printers was incorporated and became Deluxe Corporation. Deluxe Corporation was primarily a check printing company, other services such as business service operations weren’t added until later.
W.R. Hotchkiss is known for his speed-enhancing inventions such as the Hotchkiss Impringint Press and the Hotchkiss Lithograph Press. Then in 1952, Hotchkiss established the Deluxe Foundation which today has awarded $109 million in grants to many charitable organizations.
The company also led the development of magnetic link character recognition or MICR on checks to help banks automate payments and introduced “scenic” picture checks in the market. By 1982, it has begun expanding to offer business solutions such as computer forms and supplies, promotional products, and payroll. And in 2008, Deluxe Business has completely evolved from a printing company into a one-stop-shop offering a vast array of small business solutions.

Any Negatives About Deluxe Business?
Since Deluxe Business has been around for a while, it goes without saying that it has faced several lawsuits in the past. In 2016 a class-action lawsuit was filed against Deluxe Corporation in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California.
This lawsuit alleges Deluxe Check Printers for unjust enrichment, deception, and other violations of the consumer protection law. The complainants stated that the company has been charging customers delivery fees for their check orders that greatly exceeded the actual cost. However, in the following year, the case was dismissed.
Most of the complaints are about hidden fees and excessive charges. The shipping or delivery cost is more expensive than the product you’re buying. Plus, there’s an invoice processing fee and a nominal fee if you pay via debit or credit card.
There are also complaints about deceptive marketing tactics as some customers received discounted offers for a box of checks plus free shipping but by the time they check out, the prices vary and the shipping fee isn’t free at all.

Overall, Deluxe business is a legit company that provides many business solutions that will help both entrepreneurs and small business owners start, run, and scale their businesses. And just like the challenges of other big corporations, there are going to be quality and customer service issues everywhere.
