What Years in Networking Taught Me About Building a Business

Why a business opportunity is only as good as the foundation behind it.

Over the years, I have been involved with several networking companies. Some were successful, some gave people genuine opportunities to earn an income, and others eventually disappeared.

I have experienced the excitement of joining a new opportunity, learning about its products, meeting people with similar ambitions, and believing in what we were building.

But I have also seen the other side.

I have watched companies close because circumstances changed. I have seen businesses struggle because they never had a proper plan for long term sustainability. Sadly, I have also seen situations where people invested their money, only to discover that the people behind the opportunity had other intentions.

These experiences taught me something that I believe every beginner should understand.

Having an exciting business opportunity does not necessarily mean you have a sustainable business.

When I look back, I realise that building a business requires more than enthusiasm, a good product, or the promise of making money. It requires a plan, a genuine understanding of how the business operates, and the ability to adapt when circumstances change.

Today, with the growth of the internet and artificial intelligence, there are more ways than ever for ordinary people to explore business opportunities. But some of the lessons I learned years ago are just as important today.

Personal Experience: The Good, the Bad and the Lessons

One experience that has stayed with me was my involvement with Empower Network. I had almost reached the top when the company closed its doors.

At the time, I still had my day job. But I knew a few people who had left theirs and were depending on the opportunity completely. I still think about what might have happened if I had been one of them.

That experience taught me an important lesson: never let one opportunity become your only source of income. Build alongside your income, not in place of it. More broadly, I learned that not every company operates in the same way.

Some companies have excellent products, a genuine business model, and people who work hard to build something worthwhile. Others may start with great enthusiasm but fail to develop a sustainable plan.

And then there are those situations nobody wants to experience, where people put their trust and money into an opportunity, only to find that the company eventually disappears.

I am not sharing this to discourage anyone from starting a business. Quite the opposite.

I want people to understand that experience is valuable, particularly when it comes to making decisions about where to invest their time and money.

I have learned that before joining any opportunity, I should understand:

  • What the company offers
  • How it generates revenue
  • What I am expected to do
  • Whether there is a realistic plan behind the business

These are questions worth asking before getting involved, rather than after something goes wrong.

I made most of the common beginner mistakes myself, which is why I wrote the Beginner Guide. If it saves you even a little time, it has done its job. You can find it here.

Why Some Business Opportunities Don’t Last

There are several reasons why a business can fail, and networking companies are no exception.

1. No sustainable business plan

An exciting launch can attract attention, but a business needs more than excitement to survive. It needs customers, a clear revenue model, operating resources, and a realistic plan for the future.

2. Too much emphasis on recruitment

When the main focus becomes bringing in new members rather than providing genuine value to customers, the business can become vulnerable.

Think about it this way: if a company depends mainly on continually bringing in new members to keep money coming into the business, what happens when fewer people are willing or able to join? The business may struggle because its income depends heavily on finding the next person rather than serving an established customer base.

Recruitment can be a legitimate part of some business models, but it should not replace the need for genuine products, customers, and sustainable revenue. Understanding where the money comes from is important before deciding to get involved.

3. Poor management and financial decisions

Even a company with a good product can struggle if its finances are not managed responsibly or its leadership makes poor decisions.

4. Losing the trust of its customers and members

Trust takes time to establish, but it can disappear very quickly. Once people begin questioning a company’s intentions, rebuilding that confidence becomes difficult.

5. Failure to adapt

Markets change, customer expectations change, and technology moves forward. Businesses that refuse to adapt can find themselves falling behind.

These lessons are not limited to networking. They apply to almost every type of business, including online businesses.

The Difference Between Joining an Opportunity and Building a Business

Something else I have come to appreciate is that joining a business opportunity and actually building a business are two different things.

Joining may give you access to products, training, tools, or a community. But it does not automatically mean you know how to attract customers, communicate value, or generate consistent income.

That part takes learning and effort.

For example, someone can join an affiliate marketing programme and receive an affiliate link within minutes. But what happens next?

  • How will people discover that link?
  • Why should they trust the recommendation?
  • What problem does the product solve?
  • How will you build relationships with potential customers?

These are the questions that matter.

Affiliate marketing offers a different approach to earning commissions because you can promote another company’s products or services without having to create your own product or manage inventory.

However, it is still a business. You need to understand your audience, create useful content, develop traffic sources, and build trust.

And that brings us to something particularly interesting about today’s online business environment.

new strategies on building a business online

The Internet Has Changed the Way Ordinary People Can Build a Business

When I first became involved in business opportunities, access to information and practical training was not as readily available as it is today.

If you wanted to learn something new, you often depended on the people around you, company training, books, or your own trial and error.

Today, the internet has changed that.

You can learn about websites, marketing, content creation, customer behaviour, and business development without having to attend a traditional classroom.

And now artificial intelligence is taking things a step further.

  • Someone who has never written a blog post can use AI to understand how to structure one.
  • Someone who struggles with technology can ask questions and receive explanations.
  • Someone who has an idea for a business can use AI to explore that idea and identify the skills they need to develop.

This does not mean building a business has suddenly become easy. It means that some of the barriers that previously prevented people from getting started are becoming easier to overcome.

Why I Believe Affiliate Marketing Is Worth Exploring

Affiliate marketing interests me because it gives ordinary people an opportunity to learn how online businesses operate without needing to manufacture products, hold stock, or manage deliveries. You can start by choosing a subject you understand or are willing to learn about.

You can create a website, publish helpful information, and recommend products or services that genuinely serve your audience. You can also use Pinterest, social media, and search engines to help people discover your content.

The important thing is to approach it as a business rather than a quick way to make money. You will need patience, consistency, and a willingness to improve.

If you are completely new to affiliate marketing, I have put together a guide that explains the fundamentals and helps you understand the steps involved.

What I Look for in a Business Opportunity Today

Having experienced different business environments over the years, I approach opportunities with a different mindset. I no longer look only at what a company promises. I want to understand what is actually being offered.

Here are some questions I believe everyone should ask:

  • Does the company have a clear and understandable business model?
  • Is there a genuine product or service providing value?
  • Can I understand how the company makes money?
  • What am I expected to invest, financially and in terms of time?
  • Is there proper training and support?
  • Are the company’s claims realistic?
  • Can I see myself building something sustainable with this opportunity?

I would also encourage anyone considering a business to research the company independently. Read its terms, understand its refund policies, and never invest money you cannot afford to lose.

A little research today can save you considerable disappointment tomorrow.

Final Thoughts

Looking back at my experiences in networking, I would not change the fact that I explored those opportunities. I learned about business, people, marketing, commitment, and the importance of understanding what you are getting involved in.

Some experiences were positive, others were disappointing, but they all taught me something. Today, we have access to tools and information that previous generations of aspiring entrepreneurs could only have imagined.

Artificial intelligence is making learning more accessible, and affiliate marketing offers another way for people to explore building an online business.

But the fundamental lesson remains the same.

Don’t just look for an opportunity that promises to make you money. Look for a business model you can understand, learn, and build upon.

You do not need to know everything before you begin. But you should be prepared to learn something new every day.

And sometimes, that is where a better future begins.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why do some networking companies fail?

Companies can fail for many reasons, including poor financial management, an unsustainable business model, weak leadership, or changing market conditions.

5. Can artificial intelligence help me build an online business?

AI can help with research, planning, writing, learning, and problem solving. However, it does not replace human judgement, business decisions, or the effort required to build a sustainable business.
