Gardening is a niche that millions all over the world love. It is also a niche you can get into very easily if you garden and are willing to share your personal experiences.

I have always found over the years a personal niche is more fun to be in because of your love for it. It is also a good niche to be in when you can share what is going on with you as you do it.

Niches that solve problems are useful and practical. Gardening is fun, but it also brings up all kinds of different ways you could make money within it that are useful and practical as well.

This is what I want to go into in this article. How could you turn your gardening hobby into an affiliate business you make money from?

Gardening & Google

Did you know gardening is one of the tops searched keywords on Google? When I do a Google search for gardening they give me 327 million results.

Here is what else I see right away. They have paid ads across the top of the page. At the bottom of the page, Google shows me 8 other keyword phrases that are the most popular.

I tell you this because it gives you the framework of how you could start a gardening blog and make money off of that just by describing what you’re doing with your gardening hobby.

Start Your Gardening Blog In 4 Simple Steps

You can develop your blog into one of those really cool blogs in the months to come. For now, I just want you to start thinking about what you do when you garden.

This to me is the really great thing about starting a blog on your gardening hobby. You are going to write about personal experiences and not just start a blog using rehashed information from other people‘s blogs.

I would suggest you go and look at other blogs to get some ideas about what people are talking about and how they have their blogs laid out. However, initially just write like you talk and start describing that.

If you have a smartphone you can dictate directly into Siri and then copy and paste it into your blog. If not look at getting the Dragon Naturally Speaking software.

Regardless, this is a great little strategy for people who don’t like to type. Maybe your hands are tired because you’ve been busy gardening all day.

Where Do You Do It?

This might seem like kind of a silly question. You do it in your garden, right?

In reality, this could actually be a specific category on your blog as you describe where you set your garden up and why you did it that way. In the future, as you make alterations to it you can describe those as well.

The thing to remember is a lot of people who come to Google are looking for information to solve a problem. Many of these people are going to be novices when it comes to gardening.

This is the type of information they will find interesting. When you are blogging about what you do keep that in mind.

This may very well become your target audience initially. Then readers will stick with you over time if you’re providing content they find interesting and helpful to them.

When Do You Work?

When do you actually get out in the garden and do your thing? Of course, various things can come into play here, but it is a common question other gardeners have.

If you have a full-time job you may want to garden in the evenings. You also might garden before you go to work.

If you live in an extremely hot climate you may want to get your gardening done before the temperature goes up. You might also talk about specific items you’re growing in your garden and when is the best time of the day to deal with them if there is such a thing.

Why Are You Gardening?

These are the kinds of personal things you should already have at your fingertips. Your readers will have their own reasons why they garden. Like creating a garden bed, whether is it going to be a vegetable garden, setting my water source, direct sunlight, planting times, and many more…

However, reading about your reasons for gardening can be an interesting content category. Did you start a garden for exercise? Do you garden to raise fresh vegetables to eat? Do you do it to provide beauty to your yard? Where can I find garden centers to learn from?

This can lead you to all kinds of different content articles or blog posts which are the type of things that people find useful and interesting to them when creating a vegetable garden or any of your choice.

How do I begin to start a gardening business online?

I have been thinking about starting my own gardening blog and wondering how to get started. Do you know of any good resources that would help me with this? Any advice is appreciated! Thanks in advance for your time.

Hi, I am looking at starting a gardening blog. I want to make it as successful as possible. What are some things that I should be aware of when doing so?

There’s no such thing as “good” or “bad” content on the web. It all depends on what your audience wants to read. If they’re interested in learning more about growing their own food or creating garden plans, then you can write about growing techniques, crop rotation, seed packets to choose from or soil preparation, etc.

If they just want to buy plants and seeds, then you can write reviews of different varieties. The key is to find out what interests them and tailor your writing accordingly.

How do I create a website?

There are many ways to build a website, as you would see in my #1 recommendation at the end of this article. You could use WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, Squarespace, Wix, Weebly, etc. Each has its pros and cons, but if you don’t know much about building websites, I’d recommend using something like WordPress because it’s easy to learn and there are lots of tutorials available. That you can see as my recommendation at the end of this article.

What is SEO (Search Engine Optimization)?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. This means making sure that your site appears high in search engine results. There are many factors that go into determining where a page ranks, including the keywords used in the title tag, meta description, and URL.

Is blogging dead?

Blogging is not dead. In fact, it’s one of the most popular forms of social media today. However, there are other types of social media that are gaining popularity. For example, Instagram is becoming very popular among bloggers who want to share photos of their work. Pinterest is also becoming increasingly popular, especially among women.

Where can I find free images to use on my blog?

You can find thousands of free images on sites like Pixabay.com. Just type in whatever terms you want to search for, and you’ll see a list of images that match those terms.

how to start a gardening blog - getting supportHow Can People Support You?

I would suggest you set up a specific page for this. What are you going to put on that page?

  • Your affiliate links
  • Types of indoor plants and outdoor
  • How to create a good garden bed
  • Garden tools
  • And different strategies on how to grow your garden from scratch.

This is where you tell people how you make money from your blog. This is also where you invite people to join you on social media. Hopefully, you will set up a Facebook and Twitter account that you can tie back and forth between your blog.

In terms of finances, Google AdSense is a good program to start making money with a blog. Focus on the content 1st and add the Google AdSense program later.

You can also try various other affiliate programs such as Amazon, Clickbank, and so on. Just let people know that you have links to those in some of your blog articles as well as banner ads that you do make money from whenever they buy something from you.

If you’re providing good quality information, and people have an interest in learning more about gardening or even buying gardening products, they’re going to want to support you. This is how you can turn your blog into an actual business from your gardening hobby.

  1. Hallo there mate,

I am amazed at the stats you give about gardening. 327 million results? And I have been thinking that people barely give thought to agriculture when they go online.

I have a few gardening techniques and tips I can share with the world and hopefully make money from them. Thanks for igniting the flame of blogging within me.

  2. You’ve got some great ideas for starting a blog here. Having reached my mid-thirties, I have just started to get into gardening funnily enough! And I can really see how it could become addictive….and hence why so many people are searching for information about it! I think the key is to find a very specific thing to do with gardening – certain species/urban gardens/ small gardens, gardens in hot climates etc. It’s all about the niche 🙂

  3. When I had a house it was on acreage and I had a huge vegetable garden and about 50 fruit trees, not including about 50 passion fruit vines (two fence lines of them) and multiple strawberry plants.

Gardening was a great hobby of mine although I have a black thumb.  Purely by luck many of my plants would survive despite my efforts.

Gardening is a wonderful hobby yet for some reason I always equate it as old fashioned.  Your Google information would seem to refute that opinion.

Thank you for a well thought out post.

    • KerryAnn, I have a lot of friends that are into gardening like my late uncle, and wanted to know if it was possible to start a blog on gardening. This is what drive me to write this post. Passion fruit is one of my favorite drink that my Mom use to make when growing up. Loved it.

Every spring, in North Carolina, my wife keeps me busy at Loews in the gardening section, is funny that you equate it as being old-fashioned. I wish she thought so as well, lol!

Anyways, thank you for the comment and insight.

  4. In the beginning of this article, I am reminded of that movie “Coraline” where the main character has two parents who are Garden journalists but they hate gardening!

They sit at their computer typing about flowers and dirt but they hate dirt lol funny movie. I wonder if there are really out there who put a front and act like they have a green thumb and really know what they are doing in terms of potting a plant and making it grow.

Sure you can google a website but how do you really know the validity of the content? How can you trust this person planted the tomato plant just like they indicated and that it truly grew the way they said ??

Honestly I feel like I would rather go to the bookstore or library to get a book on whatever plan I am intending on trying to grow because you cannot really trust what is out there on google as valid. Unless they have pictures documenting themselves actually doing the work?

    • Hi Sophia, i always believe that gardening you have to have some type of special hands of gift. Planting I have seen work for some and for others, nothing came up from the earth.

Wherever the information comes from for planting that seed or tree, I still believe it comes down to the magic hands of the person doing the planting. But i would agree with you and go the old-fashioned way by referring to the books.

Thank you for stopping by and adding to this post.
