Starting A New Career At 50 – With Your Personal Coach!

Starting a new career at 50 is often not by choice. Millions of older Americans are unemployed, or underemployed, thanks to a terrible job market that only shows improvement when you factor in people who have stopped looking for work.

Being an unemployed middle age person can be exciting as well if you choose to look at it that way. This is what I want to talk about in this article.

How Long Can You Live Without An Income?

Many years ago I read an article that said you should have zero debt and 6 months’ income in savings by the time you are 50 years old. This is very rarely done today because most people at least have a mortgage payment.

The question you should ask yourself is how long could you survive without a new paycheck every week or every month. If it is less than 6 months you should take a step back and analyze what changes you need to make to your current lifestyle that would allow you to start a new career at 50 if you wanted.

50 Is The New 30

This is an important point to understand in terms of working and jobs in the marketplace. People are living longer and they are working longer.

If 50 is the new 30, then 70 is the new 50, and so on. At 50 years of age, you are only halfway through your working years if you decide that is the case.

Maybe you want to keep working and start a new career. If you do you can easily look at working another 20 years and you will be right in line with what is going on with the average age of employees you are working with.

To me, this is very exciting. Not the fact that I have to work, but the fact that I have options. Being older is not a handicap in a job interview, but can actually be an advantage.

Starting A New Career At 50?Are You Skillful?

President Trump campaigned a lot around the idea of bringing factory jobs back to the United States and keeping current companies from building new factories in other countries to save money on wages and taxes. This all sounds well and good until you realize that many jobs today have been replaced due to automation.

Other jobs require different kinds of skills that many people don’t have. You can also look at the marketplace in general.

We are living in a world of the Internet and technology. Being able to use a computer correctly, and incorporate things such as social media, have become more important and many middle-aged and older people have problems with this.

The bottom line is you’re going to need to be skillful enough to handle the kinds of requirements of any new career that you start when you’re 50. Are you skillful enough to start a new career at 50?

Are You Educated?

One thing you certainly have to consider is if you have enough education to start a new career. Getting educated in a different field is easier today than it used to be.

Thanks to online education universities such as The University Of Phoenix, and others, you can go back to school and become educated and receive a degree virtually in anything from the comfort of your own home.

Financing packages make it affordable for almost anybody to get a new education if it’s required for the new career at 50 you are looking at. You may as well take a look at the big picture and think that anything is possible for a new career if you have the right education.

Internet Marketing

digital marketing - For Starting A New Career At 50

One area where people over 50 are beginning to flourish is using Internet marketing to make money as their new career. There are many different ways you can go about doing this.

I would always suggest that you take a look closely at affiliate marketing as a new way to make money and possibly start your own business and make a new career out of it. Let me briefly lay out the three types of affiliate marketing that people of all ages are getting involved in.

1. Information websites combined with Google AdSense pay-per-click income. This can really be a lot of fun to do as well as very profitable when done correctly.

The most popular way to do this is to start a blog and publish content on a specific niche. Join the Google AdSense affiliate program and let Google match advertisers to your content.

You focus on adding new content to your blog. Google sells advertising and you make money when people click on the ad.

2. Pay per lead or cost per action programs. Businesses will pay you to generate leads for them.

Join an affiliate network such as Max Bounty. This gives you access to pay-per-lead and cost-per-action programs you can promote.

Again you can use your blog and add forms to it. You earn money whenever somebody completes the forms.

3. Pay per sale. You get paid to sell other people’s stuff. This can be digital information products with an affiliate program such as Clickbank.

You could sell physical products with an affiliate program such as Amazon. Regardless of an affiliate, the products and marketing materials are provided for you. You get paid to generate traffic to your affiliate website, or blog, and then have somebody purchase the product.

Final Thoughts

Starting a new career after 50 can be exciting, or it can be very stressful depending on your point of view. Whether it is something you’ve chosen to do or has been thrust upon you, the options you have are many. Hopefully, some of the tips in this article can help point you in the right direction!

  1. Hey David, Been there, done that, but at 61 not 50. It is not easy and you can get rather overwhelmed. The accounts still roll in and that 6 months bank balance really needs to be 60 months worth.

I tried many “Online Business Platforms” and never made a cent until I found one that is really awesome. It gave me the two free websites to start with and I was so impressed that I joined yet another program. Luckily it was the one you recommended.

It is the only program that I have made money with and it is recurring. Thanks for a great article and I am sure that it will help many people that have been or are going through a career change.

  2. I am at a crossroads and and in my early 50s. I am looking for a new challenge and have been learning about internet marketing though there seems so much to learn and I have certainly come across a lot of what I consider to be scams. I haven’t actually handed any money over so they could have been legit but was not prepared to risk the money to find out.
You have given me some new ideas here so thank you
